McKinley students are Helping Haiti

Helping Haiti was a GIANT success. The kids of McKinley school donated boxes full of diapers, formula and baby food to kids in Haiti who are in need. Rhyan Buettner spoke with Kindergarten classes today. She told us that one of the orphanages has almost run out of diapers and is super excited for our package to arrive. Our items will be at the orphanage next week!!! Yeah!!! The kids from Haiti will see these pictures soon and know help is on the way! Great job McKinley School!!!

Mrs. Bjork's students enjoy a taste of Hawaii

McKinley Airlines took off almost as soon as we arrived at school. We enjoyed fruit snacks on our flight. We sliced open a pineapple and tasted it's sweetness. We had 12 stations we rotated to from different kinds of fish counting, fishing for letter and fishing for numbers, "sea diving" for sea animals, sorting sea animals, making a sea star, flower lei, magic paint, matching upper and lowercase letters on fish, beginning sound matching fish to patterning with beach cut outs, until it was time to go to recess.

We also did an experiment with vinegar and baking soda to see how a volcano erupts. We rested on the beach and listened to Hawaiian music. It was a busy, fun day!

Students in Mrs. Tungseth's kindergarten class went and played Bingo with our Business partners at Riverview Heights, and made them a big Valentine. On their ROAD TRIP (as her students call a "field trip") they also saw the swans.

Kindergartners learn about burrowing animals at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center

We walked out to the barn to discover things about animals that burrow.

Teresa told us about animals that hibernate in burrows or dens over the winter.  What do they do for food?  What do they do to stay warm? When do they have their babies? What Minnesota animals are found in burrows? Mink, ermine, mice, snakes, striped gophers, rabbits, fox, coyotes, and a Dakota prairie dog were some of the things we found inside the burrow.

Back outdoors we walk, hunting for tracks and making some of our own! We used our senses to look and listen for things. We walked through cattails to get onto the wetland. We dug under the snow and found ice! We made snow angels. Molly took us on an adventure walk where we discovered a muskrat house. It looked like a mink or other small animal had taken it over because something had chewed through one of the sides.

It was a perfect day to be at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center!

McKinley Friday Friends

Once a month all the Kindergarten classes at McKinley get together to sing happy birthday to our monthly birthday friends, sing a couple fun songs or poems, and sometimes have a special guest. Last month was Santa Claus, but today it was fireman Dean Anderson reading a book about a dragon and fire safety. We also cheered on the Vikings and many of our staff and K friends were dressed in Purple and Gold. Go Vikes!
